Adjust the squelch to a fairly high level. Most times the people you want to talk to are only 1 - 2kms away (if that). Doing this will cut out a lot of unnecessary background rubbish.

I only use mine either in convoy or to trucks on the highway. More often than not they are within shouting distance anyway.

Buy yourself a little speaker and mount it on the B pillar next to your ear. That way you can still hear transmissions and your passengers don't have to.
