I would think a simple cylinder pressure test would reveal if there was an issue with bent valves not sealing, problem is, whether or not damage has been done to the pistons themselves as well. There have been a few threads about timing belts breaking and the resulting damage, most engines have been fixed, If you can get the parts cheap, also a new timing belt kit, plus labour??? All depends how much the vehicle is worth these days, and how important the vehicle is to you, as to, if you want to fix it.
