Just thought I'd update and say that I put down a bead of Sikaflex 227 and its looking much better. Thanks for pointing out that I shouldnt use silicone! The Sikaflex was $20 for a caulk tube at Bunnings, much better value than the little tubes at auto shops.
I'll test it out on a long drive to the coast tomorrow. I've got plenty left if it needs a touch up haha
