The usual issue is the plastic clip that holds the cable on the transfer case end, (or occasionally the shifter), has broken. If that's the case, it's relatively easy to replace, or you can get metal aftermarket ones.

Can I ask if you mean aftermarket metal clips/bushings only, or the whole aftermarket shifter cable assembly?
