You used to see a lot of that sort of thing hanging off bullbars at Fraser Island. You don't seem to see it anymore, because the set-up got a lot of bad press for upsetting the balance of the suspension. Also the leverage when the car bounces is huge and the stuff gets really thrown around badly.
I don't think they're a good idea at all on the move. A lighter tray when stopped only, is great.
