I did the EGR defeat about 2 months ago and disconnected the EGR completely. I have since done +/_ a 1000 km with no ill effects. The puff of black smoke on quick accelleration has disappeared. The fuel consumption has gone from 9.3 to 8.2 L\100km on the trip computer and the performance has definitely improved.
