Default 2008 JK Wrangler - Manual gearbox on the way out

Hi all, long time no post.

I live in country WA and I have a 2008 2dr 6 speed manual JK. She's done just over 140 000kms. Over the last few months I've noticed a steadily increasing drone/grinding coming from my transmission. It occurs in everything but 5th.

I took it to my mechanic on Monday for a diagnosis and he said the bearings are gone and it's on the way out and in need of a full rebuild or replacement. The transmission oil was apparently clean. It's still drive-able but obviously I'm being very gentle with it.

I'm not the most mechanically minded person but I'm trying to learn. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on what I should do? Is it better to go with a rebuild or source a replacement gearbox? What am I looking at price wise? I'm thinking the $3k to $4k mark?

Cheers
