I recently got a stock '85 FSJ Cherokee registered under the classic vehicle scheme. Overall the process was OK, just crucial to have all your ducks in a row with the blue slip check, paperwork, club membership, etc.
Given my FSJ was unmodified I can't say what lengths you'd be going to for classic registration with a different engine, etc as it may need to be weighed, new compliance plate, and so on. In terms of getting it past the RTA it really just needs a blue slip, classic vehicle declaration, and application for conditional registration.
