I've now established from Rob Lawson @ FCA that if I pay to have a replacement stock alternator installed by a dealer before mine breaks down (as a preventative measure), they will entertain a claim for that item if/when a recall is issued for the CRD. Then of course the "new improved" version would be installed under the recall. Obviously if a recall is never issued I'm stuck with the cost.
In principal it seems a better option to me than going through the trauma of an alternator failure, assuming a current stock unit is available. Back to the drawing board if not!
