The manifold nuts are killers. Removing the clutch M/C helps so you can get your hand in from the back of the engine.
A short combination spanner (ring on end open on the other) has worked for me. The manifold nut behind the turbo is the hardest.
Probably your head gasket wont be your problem. More likely the heads have gone soft from over heating or a leaking plug.
