I thought that stating that it is in fact PCM controlled would preclude it from being called a "smart alternator".

Also the battery charge level can vary significantly from traditional charging systems which always aim for a full charge. As you can imagine this can cause issues with second battery systems so its a topic of some importance with some vehicles when fitting second batteries.
