Did it say Check shift procedure or service 4wd system?
There is only one plug in connection & that's to the motor (actuator) on the transfer case, if its not seated correctly you could get issues.
Try unplugging & re-plugging it in a couple of times to clean up the contacts, also inspect the wiring loom around this plug & where it makes contact with the body.
