Rain man, you were right. The wiring had melted and this in turn melted the switch. My very trusted mechanic got a used harness and reconnected it to the new switch. All good now.
It is great that a humble mechanic in my own burb sorted the problem that I would have otherwise traveled 1 hour to the nearest reputable auto electricians. I did call the reputable sparky first, and I was greeted with the blunt response: "we don't do jeeps"....
Lucky for me then...
