After many years driving rear wheel drives up Mt Hotham in snow with chains fitted to the back - it was a revelation to fit chains to the front of our first 4WD - and found the thing pointed in some relation to the lock on the steering wheel!
I know my preference regardless of the recommendation - and it probably does relate to clearance as you point out. Last chains I fitted were on our final Patrol (we went through 6!!)
If I could get a set on the front that is where they would go.
Ice is worse than snow, its always a long way down over the side, and being a passenger on a powered 2000kg toboggan tightens the backside very quickly.
