They actually have sensors, the TPMS sensors are within the valve stems, the reader is mounted in the wheel well on each corner. If a sensor is faulty it will have to be changed by unmounting the tyre and replacing it as a unit. Check the codes though just in case as a sensor should have at least a 5 year life.
