The damage is certainly done by 80k without a catch can. Intake, turbo and intercooler will be caked in oily shit. But if you manage to clean it up, definitely worth fitting a catch can....should be first mod with any new diesel. Turning off the EGR is neither here nor there IMO, it is said to keep EGT's lower than they would be without the EGR. Best thing though for engine longevity is regular oil, oil filter, air and fuel filter changes using quality parts. With diesels also avoid extended idling and short trips if you can.
