One would think that you should be able to clone a fob from a key. Dont know who could do this. Maybe the right dealer. No matter what, it going to be expensive. I would be putting effort into looking for the lost fob.

What year are we talking about? I have had new keys cut for my '98. I used "Ultimate Auto locksmiths'. They cut me new keys from my VIN number and programmed them into the PCM. The PCM can store up to three keys.

I agree with Rusty
ring a quality auto locksmith and they will quote you over the phone exactly how much
be thankful it isnt a late model high security vehicle
they can cost thousands and take days
from talking to the guy most vehicles cost $200-500
Dealer will most likely charge you a lot more, and stuff you around (and sub-contract the job to a locksmith)

Oh, dear!
First of all - there are two almost independent systems in XJ 97+. First is SKIM - it's immo. It reads RFID chip inside the key, and sends commands to PCM and Instrument cluster to allow engine run. RFID chip is located in the key itself, even in "manual" one. This chip comes from factory unprogrammed, when it's flashed into PCM it generates keypair, and after that it can't be reprogrammed. There are also "clonable" chips - there is a way of making a key copy, that will work quite the same. This is much cheaper, and this is what most locksmiths in Russia do. To make a proper key programming DRBIII is required, and a car security code (got mine code from dealer, via written request, took 2 weeks).
The second one is remote door opener. It's a simple RF keychain, it's only opens and closes the doors. However, this keyfobs can be programmed ony using dealers DRBIII. This keyfobs are cheap, had got one spare from junkyard for free with some other purchase. You can stop using this, and install aftermarket car alarm, which will do completely the same function.

Hey, Thanks all for taking the time to reply
And apologies for slow response.
Got quoted $800.00 plus for dealer
option. That was enough to make me go
back to the bush and backtrack my movements
By the third property and feeling like a waste of
time the property owner had found them.
What a releif.
So now I am paranoid about the same happening
again, or my set just stop working!!
Got put on to a guy that said he can clone
a non standard remote for about $100.00.
Just have to drive the Jeep to him.
Will update you when I get this done
As it may help someone else.
Thanks again fellow Jeepers.
Mike
