Default Won't rev out - feels sluggish - ideas?

Hey everyone,

I've been trying to do a bit of preventative maintenance on the old XJ lately.

On a recent trip back from North Coast NSW to Narrabri the old girl got a bit hot going up the range at Toowoomba. Not into the red but close. Seemed ok after that.

I changed out the coolant for the red stuff and just replaced the thermostat and radiator cap in a bid to minimise further overheating.

I've checked the compression on each cylinder and its all within Mopar specs. Its got a new air filter and new oil and filter.

Issue I've got is that for some reason now she seems like she's lost power - I can feel its not pulling right, and it won't rev past 4k rpm. Also its developed a weird whine kinda sound after 3.5k rpm.

Any ideas what could be causing this? The whining noise has really got me stumped. I changed out my rear drums but I can spin the rear wheels freely when jacked up so its not binding there.

Any help appreciated - I'm baffled.

PS - I might pull the exhaust off tomorrow and try it without any cat and muffler to see if that's blocked.
