Default AW4 manual shift mod

Has anyone done this mod and have you experienced worth while benefits?

I'm pretty set on doing it but I dislike the idea of having 2 switches and using a silly switching pattern to control all 4 gears, I could just mod it to control 1 and 2 but where's the fun in that?

I saw one DIY switch box that looks similar to the kits already available and looked nice but the switching mechanism is to ghetto for my liking.

I found this 4 position joystick style switch that I think will work well for the intended purposes of controlling the solenoids. My main concern is the response time of the AW4 when switching positions as the central position will be "off-off" so it will tell the system to change to 4th between every shift, I'm sure the shift will be faster than the solenoid response times but some experienced opinion would be nice.

I've been wanting to do this for ages. But lost interest because I couldn't get anyone to do a control circuit for me. A bloke called clownmeat on a couple of Toyota forums and owns a 4runner. (same auto) he made a flappy paddle shifter.

Rad designs makes a kit called the rail shifter that fits down next to your park brake and is just a series of micro switches on a lever. From what I remember the price wasn't too bad and they post to Aus. They also sell a torque converter lock up switch kit also. The only problem I have read is on the late models you get a warning light on the dash which can only be cleared by cylcling the ignition which means you can't go from manual back to full auto without turning off the car but for the intended purpose I don't think this would be a issue. There are heaps of info on this topic over on NAXJA.

Default Tc lockup

Is there an advantage to TC locking on a flat highway at 100kph?
I know the risks under hard acceleration and slowing down, maybe a simple switch could be wired in to lock the torque converter lets say only when cruise control is active? Any thoughts?

look i can make the system myself without too much drama, you can use solid state switches and there's not much need for control.

one switch to change auto to man
what ever you use for gear control
tc switch if wanted.

I specifically want to know what the response time is like for the AW4 and whether or not i should be able to change gears using that joystick, which i'm really set on, without it kicking into 4th between shifts everytime?

thanks for the above links and input, the whole point was to make it as cheap as possible, I enjoy DIY. I have access to a 3D printer so i could just print up a box and shifter system using rocker switches.
