I've been struggling with the same problem with my WH and have not solved it yet.
In the meantime I use a small handheld (not ideal) or a borrowed GME TX4000 my club has set up in a camera bag with a magnetic mount antenna on the roof. Radio is powered from front auxialliary 12V socket and I just run the antenna coax thru the passenger side rear door. Works well and so far the magnetic mount hasn't marked the roof.
I would suggest drop the panel beneath the steering column, (it is hinged) and mount a remote face unit there with the face under the dash on the passenger side. (same as a KJ)

Agree it's hard to find a suitable spot for a radio,I've sat mine between the seat and the centre console on the plastic base for the seat held on by 2 sided tape and the cables tucked up under the plastic. It doesn't move on road.not sure how secure it would be with some bush bashing though.
Cheers,Dick
I was looking at the GME TX3400 and antenna combo through GME fr $758 as I too have the handhelds but suffer from the range.
I will look at the under steering column this weekend to see its viability. So far its the best spot.
Next question is where to mount the antenna as I have no nudge/roo bar and obviously no wheel carrier. Was looking at the sual bracet from the gap on the bonnet but have too see clearance and the durability of the bracket.
Cheers guys.

I put two CBs on top of my dash in the middle facing me. Doesn't obstruct my views or anything, and it's easy to change channels... also looks impressive!
