Default 2.7 CRD starting issue

Hi Team,

On 2 random occasions I've had difficulty starting my Jeep.

Both times the starter does not seem to engage and just makes a crunching/whirring noise.

Once I press down harder on the brake peddle the starter engages and the engine turns over (although I don't always have to have my foot resting on the brake pedal to start the Jeep).

Could this be a faulty starter motor, or is there a brake pedal switch that is faulty?

Regards,

JP

I've had exactly the same thing on just two occasions. Haven't tried the brake pedal thing but it seems to happen if I turn the key from the ignition on position to the start position too quickly so now I turn to ignition on, pause for a couple of those annoying seat belt dings, then to the start position. Seems to work so far.

Sounds like a worn out ring gear on the flex plate. Solution is a replacement flex plate.

Mine has done this intermittently since I owned it. The trick I've found is to make sure that when it happens is to make sure the starter motor has completely stopped. It usually engages first time after that. I think it is just a bit of weirdness that happens on some jeeps.

I thought the same, and ignored it for around 40k, thats how I ended up being towed home from Corowa, seriously advise getting it checked by someone who knows what they are about, new flex plate about $400, starter around $250, plus a couple of hours labour, towing it home $2500, hire car and motels $1500, just saying,,,,,

So starter motor fault or flex plate?
