Default Diff Problem

The rear diff (D44a) on my WG CRD has started making a hell of a noise, at least I think its my diff. It started a couple of weeks ago when I rotated my tires and has gotten worse since then. It started as an intermittent squeeking and now its constantly howling. I think it's because I was in deep water for a good amount of time and never got round to changing the fluid.

Any idea of what might be wrong? It's quadradrive and the LSD stopped working shortly after being in the water.

As the diff will probably need a good amount of work anyway, I intend to upgrade to an aussie locker so I'd like to know what parts will likely need replacing before starting work.

The front seems ok, but I've been running without a front driveshaft for the last couple of months but my new one is in the mail.

Cheers.

Get a diff master overhaul kit, the howling could be your diff bearings also change the diff oil asap as you are doing more damage if there is water in there or broken metal.

Wouldn't recommend the Aussie locker, clunking noise when normal driving, your better off rebuilding the lsd's as they work better offroad if you know how to use them properly otherwise save your money for a arb air locker.

Yep doing all fluids this week, haven't been able to do it until now due to bad weather here in the UK.

Master overhaul kit it is then. Is this the type of thing I need....?

Good news and bad news.
Being a CRD with Quadradrive you can't fit an aussie locker in the rear for 2 reasons, 1: Quadradrive doesn't accept it and 2: CRD WG Grands will repot an error code with one installed in a Quadratrac II rear diff.

You can only fit an air locker in the front, and then only if it's Quadratrac II not Quadradrive .

Change all your diff fluids and transfer case fluid and don't forget the friction modifier as required in the Quadradrive diffs.

Agree with the above but it is easy for the front to modify to allow the locker, just replace the axles from quadradrive to quadratrac axles which then allows the air locker to be installed.
