No worries, I only came across it a few days ago as I was thinking I'd like one of these...

I'm at 140k so far and always dealer serviced but think my tranny isn't 100% healthy. Not keen to pay premium prices again for apprentice level service given it's not running perfectly. So I'm considering spending similar $$ importing all the enhancement/fix/service goodies from the US and getting an independent tranny shop to do the service. At least then I'll get some constructive feedback on its condition as opposed to the useless blank response from the dealer.
Just a bit of background on this subject: There are allot of vehicles running the 42RLE transmission and it isn't exactly considered a great design although it does apparently have some high tech in it.
There are fix kits to improve operation and reliability of these units. Often the problems experienced are due to the lack of fluid quantity they hold and this results in overheating, many KJ owners have fitted tranny coolers to fix this. The alloy pan referred to earlier also adds more fluid volume and cooling.
Here's some light reading on the subject:

Hope this helps lead others in the right direction, just Googling 42RLE reveals heaps of info. Cheers.
