In the short term you can run without, the housing is an o-ring fit, doesnt need a gasket. I havent run a t-stat for 2 years, but i dont drive mine daily.
I couldnt find one anywhere except the dealer hence why i didnt replace it
Part number should be stamped on the side of the housing, could be A 642 200 2115 or A 642 200 0215 if you get the right Merc number you could try MB Spares in Fyshwick, they are very helpful when you have a MB number.
