Default JK Heater dramas

So Jeep has been parked for the last 2 weeks fired it up idled for about 5 mins AC was on jumped in, its cold here in SA so spun the heater knob round to "OH SO TOASTY", bam smacked in the face with the smell of hot coolant turned back to cold smell gone back to hot smell back.

My guess was leaking heater core??
Carpets arent getting wet no obvious signs of a leak??
Is this common? how hard are they to remove? what else could it be??

Cheers JR
