Officer Plod NSW
Hi all, just a quick question for you all, got pulled over this afternoon by a plodder in his nice commordore with flashy lights, the reason being apparently was:
1. Loud non standard exhaust, after i asked him to get dirty and have a look at the offending exhaust system i explained that i had a standard muffler and the tail pipe was 1/4 larger than standard, he gave up on that one.
2. My front bar was not compliant to Australian Road Safety Standards due to it not extending out to the full width of the wheel or not low enough to be mid level of the front wheel, this is when my argument started with him stating that 90% of all 4WD with aftermarket front bars must be illegal and his reply was,"I haven't got around to them as yet" i have attached a link which shows the bar which i have got on my jeep. His main issue was "IF" i hit a pedestrian there was the possibility that they would be dragged under the wheel, and yes i could understand his view point, but, if the bars are illegal, why is it that they are sold within Australia without compliance.
I have attached a link of the exact type of bar that i have hoping it uploads.
Cheers

This plodder had no sense of humour Dave, I half expected a little white slip and a big slip telling me to go and fix, but in saying that, I am a marked man here in the pedestrian rich hunter valley

Height is am interesting one amd not sure on the regs for that but I am sure there will be one somewhere... but yes they should be full width.
As for selling non compliant bars, to be honest there are very few actually approved (like DBOR, ARB, TJM or uneek - may be a couple of others too but you get the idea). In fact all bars are supposed to have a compliance plate on them, though haven't seen one for ages.

Thanks mate, just found some info on the RMS website, it is a large grey area which I believe is a result of, if I am correct Mr Harold Scruby complaining about bullbars in the village of Sydney

I have the uneek bar and the "compliance plate" is a sticker that fell off in less than a day!
