Wouldn't be much fun when you're door seal deep in mud!
I don't think they are appropriate for at least 50% of winching situations: stuck in mud, snow, water, sideways on a steep hill, stuck on a steep rocky track etc etc. They would take up mounts of valuable cargo space, take ages to set up, complicated and unsafe. Not surprised they never took off. Probably no cheaper than an electric winch anyway..
Or can use something similar using ropes and your tyres. I'm thinking of getting these to compliment the winch as my winch died on a trip once. It's also good as a rear winch in addition to the hand winch : The More Power Puller
