Default Brakes

On the w/end was coming down Green mount hill into Perth with my2014 Laredo diesel towing 2.8 tonne caravan. Every time I applied the brakes the car brakes shuddered. Tried the van brakes on their own and no problems. Also no problems on the flat, only on steep descent. Had just crossed the Nullabor with no problems. Could have something to do with the ABS? Thanks in advance.

My Ford Territory used to do that also. Turned out the front discs were warped and in normal operation there was no problem, but come down a steep hill with the van on and they would really shudder once they had been used a few times and got hot. Replaced the discs and all was good. It was a problem with the Territories, their discs would warp easily if they got really hot.
Haven't heard of the same problem with the GC and mine are still perfect with 50000 km on the clock.

Yep, warped rotors were common when the WJ Grand Cherokee was introduced. Haven't heard of issues with the WK2 though.

Just clocked over 100K in my 2014 Grand and for the last few thousand Klm's have experienced the same brake shudder.
Its mainly following a long stint of driving.

Sounds like warped rotors.

Cheers, Craig

The WJ had plastic pistons in the calipers and used to expand and stick in the bore causing the disc pads to rub the discs and overheat them, usually the brakes were ok until downhill where the brake application was a lot harder then they would shake. The next day when everything had cooled down they didn’t shake

I fixed mine by removing the caliper pistons and rubbing them down with 1200 wet & dry

Jeep solved that problem by changing brake supplier to Akabono, probably didn’t spell that right

I don’t know what is fitted in the WK2 or even if they have plastic pistons so more than likely the discs have got hot and they have warped a bit

It’s not a Jeep thing, I had a Prado that shuddered after 50,000 Klm that had never towed anything

Bob
