Default Drum brake parts variation?

the above is an excerpt from the FSM

when I went to swap the new brake drums & shoes across from my black '96 to white '96, I find in one case, all the circled red parts are absent.

this is because the pin..arrowed in green, is not present in the new brake shoes, there is a hole, but the pin is a rivet-style fit, and does not seem readily transferable.

without this pin in the shoe, the other parts cannot be fitted.

things is, they were NOT fitted originally in my black Sports..none of the circled red parts, which apparently are related to handbrake operation. I know they were not fitted, as I changed out the brake shoes myself recently.

Once everything was properly adjusted, the rear brakes and handbrake had been working exactly as expected (without the red parts)!

If I wanted to "refrofit" the extra hardware to my new drums and shoes, I would need to find a way to install a "pin" in my brake shoe, which i could do if recommended

However, as my brakes had worked without those parts, I am wondering if they are needed at all, or whether they were deleted by the factory at some time, some change in parts, or watever advice can be given

has anyone else come across this?

they are both 9" drums.

the FSM is inconsistent with what is in both my vehicles in several significant ways

FSM is reversed to my car on 9" vs 10" for wheel cylinders, struts, pin

It's the self adjusters. Not needed necessarily. Only that 'cable guide' may be needed to seat the spring correctly. Just be prepared to adjust your brakes a lot lol.

lol...I wondered why mine didnt either....now I know

dunno why the new shoes do not come with the pin...it is shaped and "swaged" to hold it in place,

imo a new pin would be needed, cant really get the old one out and re-swage it ?

all the more incentive to hurry up & build up my D44 with discs

just a couple of things..I checked out Bleepin Jeep AFTER I had done one vehicle, as the self-adjusting parts had not been connected, I could see on his video where the part went. He is a handy resource

for the newbie, it can be frustrating..its MUCH easier to compress the pin spring by using a 9/16" long socket on a ratchet,,,this pushes the pin right back and it can be easily and safely manipulated...using pliers as he does is downright wretched, I tried it that way first.

the self-adjuster arm seems to get bent and/or misaligned, so I got them in contact with the star wheel, thats on the spare car, which has ABS..even though I took the ABS rear axle complete...no ABS light comes on, so obviously there was issues before, parts were bent, damaged etc

amazingly easy to bleed, gravity bled both vehicles, only ~100ml on the black one, pedal feels really solid on the road, and that is with the drums needing to be adjusted slightly tighter

another thing..IF you have self-adjusters, when you get shoes..(i got mine from the brake shop)...pay attention if the pin that holds the self-adjusting gear is fitted, (mine were not) otherwise, if you want to retain that function, you would need to drill out the old pin, and fit it to the new shoes with a spot of MIG...I took pics, might post one later
