Default 2005 TJ Wrangler - D30 ARB Air Locker

Hi All,

Just looking for a bit of advice, I need to replace the rubber o-ring in my front ARB locker as it's leaking air into my axle tubes and no longer locking.

Has anyone ever done this? I've pretty mechanically minded but have never played around with diffs too much so I am a little apprehensive.

From the research I have done it doesn't seem particularly hard but surely there is a bit to it?

Has anyone done it? Any idea how long it will take and how hard it is? Just don't want to get half way through, bugger something up and cost myself thousands.

Not hard to do.
Download a PDF of the locker you have.
Get the quad rings , and a new bulkhead fitting , just incase oring is stuffed in it.
I put a bit of 50x50 across the pumpkin and gently pry behind the ring gear to get it out.
Technically you should need a spreader to get it out , but always manage without.
Dont drop and mix shims up.
Note markings on bearing caps , so they go back the same way.
Lube up new Quad rings before putting seal housing back on.
Probably take you half a day the first time.
Watch plenty you Youtubes first.

Had mine out last week end, made a home made spreader, it makes the job a lot easier. Turned up a tool to press in the new axel seals,. Sometimes with out a spreader it can be very difficult to get the diff back into the axel housing.

I'll be replacing the seals and bearings in my ARB equipped D30 tomorrow.
Here's pics of the case spreader I built several years ago when I replaced the gears in my D44 rear, and of the clamshell bearing puller I built to make this one easier.

Nice work Jonny jeep. The right tools make all the difference. A lot of bad jeep stories come from dodgy jobs done by back hicks with no idea and a tool box full of hammers. My D44 had supposedly been rebuilt by an expert just before I got it not sure what he was what he was an expert in but it sure wasn't diffs. I have found taking my time, fully researching the repair and taking the time to manufacture or turn up the correct tooling makes a world of difference when working on the TJ. Just because they look a bit agricultural doesn't mean you need to treat them that way. Great too see there are still some good old fashion mechanics out there making up the tools to do the job right.
