Default Diesel Gearbox Rattle

Whenever I’m in neutral and the clutch is depressed there is a rattle. This has been going on for some time now. Initial I thought it was the throw out bearing so I changed the clutch, throw out bearing and pilot bearing but the rattle is still there, actually worse. So I’m thinking it has to be the gearbox idler bearing? Has anyone had any experiences with this?

Does it make the noise with you foot on the clutch & in gear, if not it may be the input shaft bearing or the spigot bearing on the end of it in the gearbox. Infact if putting the thing in gear shuts it up, it could be anything that rotates when in neutral, even worn selector forks.

As long as the clutch is in the noise is gone, doesn't matter what gear I'm in. I think it does it when in gear with the clutch out but it hard to tell because I have to be moving. It happens when I'm driving with the clutch out in neutral.

Default Diesel Gearbox Rattle

My money is on the clutch fork retaining spring. Mine broke off when I did the clutch and didn't have the spare to put it back on.

Does the gearbox perform as normal. ?

Does it do it with clutch in & in neutral?
Do you require the clutch right in for the noise to be gone.
I am trying to assist you in determining if it is related to input shaft motion or not.

I'm going gearbox bearings first off. Selector shaft wear second.

Hmm, could be but when I push the clutch in a little it still does it. You’d think that some pressure on the fork would stop it? I wonder if there is a way to check that without pulling out gearbox. Maybe take the clutch actuator off?

The gearbox seems to be working fine. Sometimes there is a slight crunch when going into second for the first time on cold mornings.

It never does it with the clutch in. The rattle stops as the clutch disengages the gearbox (or there about, I’m comparing the position of the clutch pedal to when in gear). Appreciate your help.
