Default WG Transfer Case Oil

Hi all,

Various threads on the forum talk about the Transfer case oil changing from Auto fluid to MobilFluid 424. Was there ever a service bulletin or anything for this change?

I pretty much only use Penrite fluids and their website still recommends Automatic transmission fluid. I contacted them to confirm, but they reckon they have checked and don't see any change.

Cheers, Rob.

I reckon when I had my WJ I used the atf that was suggested in 2 squirty packs, easy and clean, couldn't find the tractor fluid Mobil 424 and the Mopar stuff is like liquid gold.

Good to hear. I'd rather use ATF since I have a drum of the stuff here. The Penrite bloke said it shouldn't cause it to shudder. Can't hurt to give it a go I guess.

Cheers.

Would be interested to know too. I have 2 liter the MobilFluid 424 lying around in my garage and wanted to change it on the V8 for ages. Problem was that my fluid remove plug was stripped and I had to live with it.

But might be using it on the NP242 I am about to install in the next couple of months. Nonetheless if ATF works then even better.

I just read a bit about the NP242. Looks like I can use regular ATF in this transfer case anyway.

You could even use 5w20 in it

So, the NP242. My understanding is that it doesn't have the viscous coupler like the NP247. Would this make a difference to the required fluid?

Just found this for the 247 case.

What is the reason for swapping out the transfer case? Is it just a fuel economy thing, or some other reason?
