Default Trail Rack / Trail Gate

A few questions guys?

I am designing a custom trailgate and wondering what opinions exist on building and mounting them.

I can get some excellent marine tubing (quite thin but with a much smaller inner diameter) stuff which is light and should be strong enough. I intend to mount it to the stock bumper at this point via a gatepost system on the left side so the trailgate and tailgate open opposite directions. I see no real advantage in enlarging the rear step. I do not plan to extend beyond the spare tyre width (from the rear of the vehicle). I am building spaces into the structure to avoid masking the tail lights.

It is intended to house up to three jerries, antenna, highlift, shovel, light etc etc.

BTW to get all the dimensions right I would like some opinions on difficulties imposed by the spare wheel and what the situation would be with 33s? What will need to be done to mount 33R15 on the tailgate?

Nice idea Will. Sounds like one of those Garvin Wildernes racks that some people run in the states. You may want to do a search on JU for the Garvin and get some ideas.
As for the 33's on the tailgate, depending on your tyre size (presuming 33x12.5?) it will fit on the tail gate (you can use bumpstop extensions to spread the load/weight). From what I hear though, it will put stress on the rear door and could buckle it. I'd like to get a tyre carrier like Warns but I'm not sure thats worth while for 33's.

Here's some ideas. I'd love a jerry can rack on the back of my TJ. I have seen a TJ getting around up north QLD with a roof rack loaded with about 6 of those little 5 litre black plastic jerry cans spread out to even the weight.

Check this out: Off-Road Receiver Rack
Frame made of heavy duty tubular steel with reinforced steel flooring
Mounts into any 2" receiver hitch
Black powder coated steel construction
Convenient storage system for excess luggage, cooler, camping gear, etc.
Deep storage bin to secure cargo
Hauls up to 500 lbs.

This is all Steel Horse stuff.

The biggest problem with swing aways is leverage ,with about 20odd kilos of tyre and 20kg per jerry (full),so with 80odd kg rocking back and forth the mounting MUST be strong and no movement otherwise
even .5mm of clearance will sound like the rack is banging and clanging
also don't attach the rack to the bumper and the body as the body will tear
