Default Drive Shaft stuffed

0430 this morning I find my front drive shaft is cactus, cv not looking at all good. I know theres threads on the subject, but a couple of questions before I pull the damn thing off. Talking about WG 2.7 CRD.

1. Driving around with the shaft off, will it harm anything else. Need to go to Dubbo in a couple of days, 1200Km round trip.

2. I suppose I will have to source replacement from OS as usual.

3. Is the 2.7 the same size as the other models ??? Yet to do research.

Your wisdom on the subject would be most welcome.

Hail stone dents from yesterday...don't care anymore.

Default Drive Shaft stuffed

You don't have to be in a rush to get stuff from overseas. I just had to replace my rear drive shaft because of the yoke being distorted. I ended up giving the blokes from poly 4X4 in Melbourne a call. They had a replacement on its way that afternoon and in my hands the next day. That said mine was for a wrangler which is a bit simpler perhaps. As for driving around without the shaft connected if its the same as the wranglers connections it should be fine I imagine but I will leave that question to someone far wiser then me to answer. In the meanwhile remove it ASAP. I was out at Kakadu and had a CV that was suspect. As we were driving back to Darwin it started to vibrate and then blew the side out of the transfer case. I hate to imagine what would have happened had the front let go at highway speeds!

Default Drive Shaft stuffed

The other option is just take it to a local generic mechanic and see if anyone local specialises in repairs. When I had to replace mine (Front this time), I ordered one from Tom Woods (I wanted to upgrade to something stronger), and it was the wrong length. My mechanic gave me a call to explain then sent the old and the new to a engineering place and they made up a hybrid of the two shafts for me. I was a bit amazed!

Well I've got it off in about 30 mins, took longer to get my tools sorted, 8mm socket ran away, thank god for walk under ramps, the rear CV the culprit, boot looked okay a week ago when I did service but torn today and the inside looks like it hasn't seen grease for awhile.

Thanks Squall the WG has a CV joint shaft, stupid idea, will start at Poly and see whats, what. Would rather get one from OZ, less hassle if things aren't right.

Wont be any damage from driving it in rear wheel drive, I had mine out and drove it for over a month. Tom woods will make shaft to whatever dimensions you want. Not sure if its the same as a v8, put up dimensions and ill get mine for ya.

Thought as much, nice for confirmation, thanks Turbo. From flange to flange laying on the bench 84mm extended 87.5mm.
Going to see if local CV shop has any joints for it, might just chuck in some new joints, don't do any hard stuff nowadays and will track down a uni joint job later on.
For info folks, did hear a sound like a airated hydraulic pump or wind in the roof racks come and go the other day, this morning though it was the CV clunk and growl, I knew straight away and said the appropriate words, drove back home.

Is this where the Ford or Holden CV comes into the picture if rebuilding standard.
