Default temp sender in XJ

Just bought myself an XJ (94 model) The temperature gauge needle flicks up when starting the car but then returns to zero and wont budge. I have tried the simple unplug sensor and plug back in trick with no luck. The sensor has only one black wire running into the top of the plug is this right?

There are two temp senders on yours. Which one were you pulling the plug off?
One for the ECU is in the thermostat housing and the one for the gauge is right at the back next to the rocker cover on the right side looking from the front.

I was referring to the one on the manifold. I assume this is the one that operates the dash gauge. If not i may have to get into the thermostat housing sooner than anticipated. I am a bit anxious (********) over things like this.

The temp sender is not on the manifold at all. You are looking at the wrong sender. It is in the head where I said above.

Sorry having a blond moment, it is the one at the rear of the block that i had concerns over. The front sensor (thermostat housing) has two wires into the plug but the back one only has one wire. Just thought it might be a missing wire causing the problem. Love your website BTW.

I just checked mine for you and also has only one wire. The other one wont make any difference to your gauge at all. I would be buying a new rear sensor and see if that is the cause.
