Default Cold Air Intake - Which one, and is it a DIY?

What sort of job will this be for a man of very very average mechanical ability?

My credentials thus far: Took the throttle body apart, cleaned grunge off it, and replaced the Throttle Pos Sensor, well me and my mate did without any disasters. However still got error code and still had to take it to hammonds for the computer stuff.

...so installing a cold air intake....am I up for it?

Also, any advice on brands? KandN?

The factory system IS a cold air intake!
If you want to improve it just remove the deflector on the front with hacksaw or something.
You can also cut the tube where it exits inside the airbox to a 45 deg angle.

it is?? So that means I'm just talking about replacing it with a better one? Example:

I've been told something like this will improve economy and performamnce a little.

It also depends if you are planning on doing offroad or dusty roads. The K&N filters breath a bit better but dont seem to filter quite as well & this setup isnt compatible with a snorkle.
They also make a lot more induction noise.Power increases are so small as to be negligible.
If your after performance get a quality tuner such as the flashpaq & run on premium.

Right, so this just leads me to ask more questions which are good indicators of my mechanical knowledge..(lack of) 1. flashpaq?
2. I actually did think this one before but thought it was way too dumb.....how does the so called cold air filter get cold air, if it is indeed still sucking hot air from the engine bay? Snorkel?

If you have a good look at your set-up, youll see a small intake pipe that goes from the air-filter box to the front grill next to the headlight. Thus drawing air from the front of the car outside of the hot engine bay.
Flashpaq is a engine computer programmer which gives good results.
