Firstly flush the container out before filling for the trip, if a steel jerry then pour the flush fuel out thru a mesh filter to make sure no paint chips are floating a round, I would usually just pour the fuel using a plastic funnel that has a fine mesh filter in it and a flexy spout, $5 at supercheap have used them for decades and no drama, the most important thing is clean fuel cans, I store my steel jerries with a bit of diesel in them and closed so they don't rust and with some of mine dating from the 60's and still good, I stow my funnels and hoses in zip lock bags inside a designated tool bag only opened for use, keeps crap off/inside them. You can go very ******** and get some with mini filters in them, look the part I suppose.....
I also change my fuel filters every 20K worth the effort.

My thoughts on these are still unsure but know some people who swear by them, little bit awkward to use:

Yep, if your pumping fuel out of drums at a way station then you certainly need a filtered funnel or filtered pump and a bit of time to spare but if your loading and carrying your own Jerries then making sure your can is clean when you start you don't need to waste heaps of $$$ on some bling filter especially as I have seen folk just put them away in a side locker, gotta laugh proper storage is 90% of the deal.... One person holding the fancy funnel the other holding up a 20kg drum in air as it slowly washes in will soon change ideas and with the filler on these WK2 George St tractors filling from a can of any description is going to be one big Pain, my old 12v fuel pump will be doing the job on this rig while I sit back having a brew.... plugs into anderson and can suck away at a Jerry sitting on the ground, too long to hold a 20lt can up in air.
