Default OBD 2 Scan tools

Hi Guys,

I know alot of us on here use the ALPHA OBD or the JScan app to solve alot of our issues.
But I am also looking for an App, computer program, Scan tool, that covers other car makes, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Kia, Holden etc.

My son is in the market for something along these lines, but is unsure what to get. He has looked at the Snap-on Diagnostic tool as this is what they used in the garage where he used to work and he is used to working with it. But with a price tag of 6K and yearly subscription of nearly 1K this is way outside of his budget.
Is there a cheaper option out there, maybe without all the extra bells and whistles, but capable of reading, clearing codes, performing maintenance procedures, etc.
He wouldn't mind spending about a grand on something, as he is constantly over and back to the local garage and they charge him $50-$80 to read or clear a code each time.

I first got a cheap wifi thing. Problem was I tried to initially set it up with windows 10. The anti-virus, windows defender, saw it as containing a virus & deleted it along with the password so that was the end of it.
I then got an ebay reader for about $12 , it works fine. Can read most codes & delete them.
The wifi one, an EML something has the capacity to run all sorts of real time stuff.
Somewhere on AJOR there is a set of instructions to set up a pirate DBR 111 scanner using a basic laptop. One day I may do that.
