Default XJ Rear Brakes

On my standard 2.5 Td when I start off most mornings the rear shoes lock up the first time I touch the brake pedal, ending in a skid. I then have to stop and pump the front disks up, so the front disks come on the same time as the rear shoes. If I remember I pump the pedal four times before I start off. It is particulary bad if the weather is damp. Any one else had this problem. When I get time I will see how much pad is left in case they are low.

Sounds like you have too much adjustment on the hand brake lever should ratchet up at least three clicks and more and you will get binding.
Do you park at night with the hand brake pulled on?if so try parking it with hand brake off one time and see if any difference

Default Xj Rear Brake shoes stick on

Regarding the rear shoes jambing on first thing each morning, Grant said; "Sounds like you have too much adjustment on the hand brake lever should ratchet up at least three clicks and more and you will get binding.

That was exactly the problem. I now need to go away and adjust the
handbrake. Parking with the handbrake off showed that the brake system worked fine.

They came fitted to the XJ so I do not know their history, but it now seems the hand brake has too much slack, and has caused the problem. I parked with the hand brake off on the flat and the system worked fine in the morning. I live on a hill and the rear shoes were locking up when I first touched the brake pedal, fromt discs would not come on so I suspected the master cyclinder was leaking 2 mins later all ok and all four corners working. very odd...
