A daredevil kite surfer has been picked up by a tropical storm and smashed head-first into a building in an extraordinary accident caught on video.

Kevin Kearney ignored pleas from authorities to take shelter as Tropical Storm Fay hit the Florida coast with 100km/h winds and torrential rains — and it almost killed him.

The 26-year-old is in critical condition in hospital after being blown into the air by a gust of wind, thrown to the ground and picked up again before being slammed into a building across the road.

"The wind was whipping around, picking him up and dragging him around," Lois Bowman of the Fort Lauderdale fire service was quoted in the UK's Telegraph as saying.

"Is there a lesson here? Whenever there's a storm warning, use common sense."

Friends of Mr Kearney said he'd been equipped with an emergency harness but had been picked up by the storm so quickly that he didn't have time to use it.

He had just strapped into his sail when the first gust struck.

I just can't see what was going through his head. "Wow some strong winds I have trouble standing up in. I might just tie myself onto a parachute".
