Default J20: Project Update

Thought I might as well start a thread on the J20 Project - Just incase anyone was interested.........
The starting point - 1981 J20 as purchased from young Timmy @ Easter 2005.......

About a day after we got it home it was time to start work on it...

Yup worlds biggest LPG tank.....but the cover just restricted the rear view TOO much so here was in the process of being removed.

Stripping the front end in prep for body & new engine

More updates coming in soon - but think there's a limit to the number of pics....

Just fitting up the flywheel and looking at the starter ring, the teeth are a bit chewed....just a bit....
So naturally I don't wanna fit the sucker only to find the rest strip off......
Anyone that's seen a chewed starter ring will know that the ring usually gets chewed on one side......
So I'm thinking of removing the ring, flipping it and refitting it.....
But my questions are:

Is this doable?
Can I just pound it off & back on?
Or maybe a bit of heat to help?

So anyone done this? Any ideas/thoughts???

The heat trick is the way to go Wooders. I have done this before in my trade but not on cars.
Use the oxy and mount the flywheel so the ring can be heated and tapped downwards.
Heat the ring to refit but not to much in the one spot.

Yeah was thinking oxy and slight tapping to remove.....To remount was thinking of warming the ring whilst cooling the flywheel...but wasn't sure if it should have been pressed on/off (& don't have a press ...yet )

I have seen my father do this on his trucks a few years ago. You would notice that the ring gear gets much more wear in some spots than others as this is where the engine stops on the compresion stroke. Just heat with oxy and knock off ring gear and move it around about half the distance to the next worn spot and knoch back on again before it cools down(use brass drift as gear is brittle). Next time it needs to done flip the ring gear over and get two goes at that side as well

Onto the Interior - love that shag-pile carpe held on by liquid nails.......Mental note - never use the wire brush on the grinder to remove the liquid nails without suitable breather apparatis (man that made me sick)....

Doors & seats gone

And the interior just about gutted

The boss back on the grinder.....

And again:

Well these are the old pics - will snap some fresh ones over the next few days
