Default Starter Motor no engaging

Seems to be getting more regular on first attempt to start the starter motor just spins flat out, no crunching noise.

Turn off try again and it engages fine.

Would anyone be concerned about getting stuck one day?

Sounds like the solenoid not throwing, any auto sparky should be able to fix.

The hardest part of the job will be removing the engine mount so you can get the starter out. I purchased a new starter because mine was sticking & not retracting from the ring gear. When I seen you need to remove the engine mount I gave up.
I think having the vehicle on a hoist would make the job much easier.

I reckon the solenoid could be replaced while still in the Jeep, remove the 2 bolts that hold the starter to the bell housing allowing the starter to be rotated, undo the electrical connections & the 2 screws that that hold the solenoid to the starter to remove it.

For easy access you remove the left hand side inner plastic guard.

I've got exactly the same issue as hotqld.

Anyone know of anyone in Sydney who can fix this economically?

Default Starter motor no engaging

Hi all

I had similar problem a few years ago at 170000. The auto elec was unable to remove the starter motor after several attempts. I contacted jeep in newcastle and the starter was replaced whilst i waited for 4 hours or so. Hasnt played up since. Cost about $1000. One of those jobs that needs to be done by a jeep experienced mechanic with all the required tools and equipment.

Happy trails

Disconnecting the electricals & unbolting the starter is a piece of p***

What's the easiest way to remove the engine mount?

Clarky, Did you fix the problem or left it?
Is this something we can leave for a couple years?
Like it probably just spins one in every 5-10 starts then allways no problem next try.
