Default Upgrading to Selec-Trac

Or should I say degrading?

Anyhow, I know I has never been avalible in Oz, but I had one of these Selec-Tracs in Canada in WJ. Loved it.

I want the same here.

Any idea if Cherokee NP242 and its shafts could be fitted in WJ or the only way to upgrade is to ship transfer case, selector and both drive shafts from North America?

So I have found the right parts for the swap in Canada and the only issue is shipping to Australia and associated costs.

Any suggestion how to approach this task? It will be a transfer case and two drive shafts that need to be shipped.

What kind of weight and dimensions we are talking about here?

Thanks

Don't know about the weight but there are places like USAtoAUS that do general shipping from the States if you can get it to their depot cheap. I only shipped once out of Canada and it was definitely seemed dearer than the States

I need some advice here.

So I found the necessary parts (I think) that could be shipped to Australia for about $1000 all inclusive. I am prepared to pay that price, but obviously hoping to get a good quality parts that I can use with minimal issues.

These parts came from 2003 V8 grand with 230K kilometers on the clock. That sounds like a lot. The vehicle is from Pennsylvania where they have cold snowy winters. Supposedly, the car was running fine and TC worked with out issues shifting in all gears. The fluid came out clean when drained.

I am looking for an opinion if this is something that could be still usable and serviceable, or should I walk away from this all together.

According to the part number the case has 23 spline input, 32 spline rear slip, 2.500 input. Will this fit my australian V8 Quadra Track front shaft if I swap it with the output shaft?

Is the drive shaft still Ok to use despite the superficial (hopefully) rust?

How much does it cost locally to have a TC rebuilt off vehicle?

If you're really serious about this, then there is plenty of research to be done on your part. You have to search the US forums for more info as not too many of us have done this here in Oz

The 242 is a straight in bolt on. However I would go for the 242HD which has thicker chains and definitely a lot stronger and worth the hassle of hunting, sniping, shipping, installing and use! . I've gone another direction.. 5.38 4Spd.

You may have to install a hack and tap SYE .

Heaps of info there on JF, JU, Pirate, MC, FB, NACGA, Instagram, G+. etc.

All the best and more Googling I'd say.

Oh yeah, have you sourced the gear bezel and figure out how to change it? There'a a special technique for taking the shifter out.

The Selectrac TC's out of my XJ's are also 242 J.
I can see a difference with the housing around the rear output shaft and I also don't know about the transmission mounting pattern: AW4 vs. 45RFE.

Are they the same TC internally?
Maybe the housing components are all that need to be altered? Cheaper?

Just thought I'd help to complicate things a little more

242HD has 32 splines, bigger chains and sprockets, it's similar to to 242J (27splines) but not the same.

Looks like you've found the 242HD, Sockeye. I'd grab it before it's goooooooone.

Here's your installation instructions. Any problems, ask these blokes

P/S: Ruffy, you don't have to keep your 242J and follow suit. What you have in the WJ/G is great. It's mostly 2WD but goes 50/50 4WD automatically when needed, say WOT at the lights!......and other slippery conditions.
