Bset option is to go with an np242 or 231 tcase from a XJ 242 or TJ 231,
Then you can have 2wd aswell as 4wd i have done this on mine.
You may need to swap out the input shafts but they are inerchangeable so it just measn stripping the cases and using the sun gears from your 249 in the 242/231. Use the shifter tab that comes with the Tcase not the one on there now as it is to long.
Tailshafts on the 249 just bolte straight upto the 242 so yours would be the same if you get it from a XJ auto.

Hello Dave, I'm doing this swap also but the ZJ tailshaft does not fit and neither does the tailshaft that came with the NP242. How did you fit a tailshaft to your ZJ?

James

James, i had one made up to suit just for the front suited the CV style round flange o the front diff and mated to the tcase. got it made in the US all i supplied was the length the guy required.
If you look on ebay US look there there was a few companies making them.

I would have thought that this would have been the golden opportunity to get rid of the infamously troublesome front Rzeppa CV joint! Just change out the pinion input.......

Then you could use the standard front driveshaft from the donor XJ that you get the 242 from .

Here's a link to a good "How To" on this swap..... it's pretty complete and with photos.

Also, have a good look at all these on this linked page with all of its links:

Good Luck!
