Default Any ideas re caravan sway?

Hi All
Bought a WG to tow my 2.5T caravan and could not get over about 85kmh before the caravan started to sway which pushed the car around.
Before this I towed it with a Navara and did not have this problem.
Anyone got any suggestions what could be causing this?
I have a Weight Distribution hitch and anti sway bar fitted but did not seem to help.
Appreciate any suggestions

Well the WJ's back end haves tendency to sway, I'd get a addco rear sway bar for starters and if you find it's still bad I'd get some stiffer rear coils and or airbags...

Swaying is normaly caused by not enough ball weight, try loading the van differently by placing heavier thing's to the front and see if this helps, also where you using the WDH on the navara if so have you adjusted it to suit the new tow vehicle ( very important read the instructions and set it up correctly ) the height of the ball is also important so make sure it's correct before setting up the WDH, I hope this helps, whats the weight ( actual weight not whats on the plate ), size and layout of the van? May be helpful. I just noticed your in Melbourne, where abouts, if you not far away I could have a look ( I've been in the caravan game for a few years )

Default caravan sway

Hi,
I had two 25ltr jerrycans full of water on the back of my little 11' caravan and it was shite to tow. I simply moved them to the front of the van on the draw bar and the difference was unbelievable. Went form utowable to a dream.
dunno if that helps you at all.

Greenjk is right, not enough ball weight with to much weight over the back of the trailer axle, this causes maker raiser to take weight of the rear axle of the towing vehicle resulting in trailer sway, make sure that the van is loaded with more weight over the front than the back & you should solve this issue

I want a front drive shaft so I can go 4 wheeling

you need to check the bushings in your rear upper A-arm control arm. These often are torn in old WJ/WG's and will contribute to the symptoms that you are having.
If they are damaged, obviously you will have to replace them.

I have the same trouble with my boat on my WJ. To be honest, I have replaced my bushings, but haven't yet had the opportunity to test if they have fixed the problem. So I cant be certain that it is the problem, but seems likely.

good luck.

I second that as that was my problem.

If moving extra weight to the front doesn't help as suggested by others, then take a close look at the bushes. Stand at the rear at each side and try and push as hard as you can on the rear pillars (side to side). There should be no movement at all sideways other than slight body roll.

Also have someone underneath looking at the bushes whilst someone else pushes as above.
