I just got back from JB Hifi I asked about a 'cheap cd unit that idealy played MP3 to go into a soft top old jeep that can stand up to rough conditions and the sales guy recommended Pioneer then Kenwood then the rest as an order of preference for a 4x4. This was not based on sound quality rather the way they buffer to handle bumps. In particular he said the pioneer when playing MP's is great in rough conditions as they double the bufferspace in MP3 mode it slows down loading but improve playback.
They had the basic pioneer MP3 for $173 which i thought was a great buy if your not after all the features. Nb it only has one pre out so if your wanting a 4 ch amp maybe move up a couple of models. The next model was about $260 and had a fold down face and 2 pre outs the fold down face may give a little dust protection but I am a little skeptical about that.
his only advice was the cheap brands are worse in a 4x4 because the drive mechanisims are where they save the money for the cheaper units and this is what affects the playback on rougher roads
this seemed to be the most realistic advice i have been given by a salesman for audio stuff his advice was the cheap pioneer unit and not trying the hard up sell
