Default JK Compass in denial

It appears I am permanently headed South East.

This, I find most bloody inconvenient as I have places to go and people to see.

The problem occurred after I removed the Daystar panel to run my phone cradle cables.

I noticed the previous owner (or who ever installed the Daystar panel) has obviously lost a screw and replaced it with a large chipboard screw, causing the compass module to sit slightly loose.

I have been heading SE ever since (I figure that must be where Jeep Hell is).

I have unplugged the compass module and note that I am still heading SE ... so clearly this is the default.

I have opened the module and can see no obvious problems ... cabling and connector also appears to be ok.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

I would take the Jeep to Jeep ... but I am not sure that there is a dealer South East of here

I can not help but wonder what would happen if you drove over the earths magnetic pole? Would it change to NW? Long drive to find out and you would never get there if you followed your compass.

Sorry mate I have no soulution, just smart ass comments.

I had a similar problem when I left my mobile phone in my Daystar panel. I fixed it by doing the calibration procedure in the owners manual.

After u reconnect everything, find a big enough open space and drive in a circle..... It resets or recalibrates the compass module some how as per the owners manual...... Also I had a similiar problem when I mounted my 2 way radio on top of the panel.... The magnet in the speaker on the 2 way was confusing the compass.....

Cheers

x2 on this. Is a recalibration procedure in the manual. Driving in circles without activating CAL is probably not going to do much.

To manually calibrate the compass:

1. First enter the variance mode. Press and hold the left button (located on the instrument cluster) for approximately 10 seconds to enter the variance mode, and release the button when the VAR (Compass Variance) symbol appears.

2. The current variance value will also be displayed. Once in the variance mode, it is necessary to release the button, and then press and hold it again (approximately 10 seconds) until CAL is displayed (solid, not blinking).

3. Manual compass calibration has been initiated. Drive the vehicle slowly in one or more circles under 5 mph (8 km/h) in an area free from large metal objects until the CAL symbol is extinguished.

When the CAL symbol is no longer displayed, the compass is calibrated and should display correct headings.

Verify proper calibration by checking North (N), South (S), East (E), and West (W). If the compass does not appear accurate, repeat the calibration procedure in another area.
