2.4 petrol 4 cylinder
Hi guys, I've had an XJ for 6 yrs and I am now thinking of getting a KJ 2004 2.4L 4 cylinder petrol. Reason being I'm an old dude and more interested in cruising bush tracks rather than tackling cliff faces. The 4 cyl is way more economical than the V6 (also cheaper rego). I am way over overheating automatics so she comes with a 5 speed manual. All of this suits me to a T, just what I want.
There is one for sale for 8K$ with 188km on the clock, very neat and clean, very original. I've been for a test drive and it seems to have adequate power.
Does anyone have any feedback on this model? They seem to be pretty rare and there is not much information out there. Does it use the gearbox out of the diesel? Indestructible?
Thanks in advance.
Bill

It's funny... I've been looking up old threads about lack of power but it seems it all depends on your perspective. I came across threads where you are saying even the v6 is underpowered! Diesel.. been there in a Land Rover TDI. Not impressed.

Turns out, after reading myriads of pages of comments (couldn't sleep) that this thing wont pull my 'van, so the deal is off.

Not much towing capacity, 900 kg braked I think. No better than an old RAV4. Great for a personal runabout but thats about all.

A 2.4 is perfect for the school run on snowy days. If you want to tow a van, find a decent 2.8 CRD, or if it's a light rig, a 2.5CRD might do.
Been there, done that.

Yes I have an '05 2.4 manual daily driver. Have had it for about 4yrs and although it's a great vehicle to drive, it does lose power straight away on hills and it's even slower when towing a trailer. Although overall it's economical, if I had done my homework properly in the beginning I would have gone a diesel.
