Default Thinking about a Snorkel

I found this ElCheap-O kit on eBay for about $120 .. drank some HomeBrew and watched some youtube about fitting ElCheap-O kits drank some more HomeBrew and decided to ask your opinions .....
Apart from looking Super Cool and keeping up with the local LandCruiser's ...
I cant ever see Myself being a XJ Submarine (as it rarely rains in the Outback) ............................. and when it does You would be Bogged before You drowned Your engine .........
BUT! ... apart from being Super Cool! ......................
Dust! ..... and I have read they are good for Cold Air Induction!
Which makes sense to me ... getting Fresh Air instead of Hot Dusty Engine Air!
Not scared to Cut a hole in the XJ (as I already cut holes in the hood for the Louvers) ..........
I am so tempted to push the Buy it Now button .....

I did it to my 1995 and love it.

I got this one for $80 delivered and it is top notch..

There are a few things to consider though. Where is your washer bottle located? My 1995 has ABS and washer bottle right where the holes were supposed to be. You will need a hole saw. You can re route the snorkel hose in different ways..

You can find my write up on XJ Mods VSB14 around post #164.

Here is a small excerpt from it..

"Did the airbox mods today in preparation for the snorkel hose fit up. Now, the pic below shows how the ARB and Chinese snorkel airbox hose bracket is supposed to be fitted. Then your supposed to drill a 75mm hole straight down and your hose runs down and up and around under the guard/fender. This method can leave your hose exposed to tyre rub.

Others run the hose/airbox adapter straight out through the side so that the hose is right up under the fender all the time and protected as it will be right up where your washer bottle was.
It took a few goes to get it right, but i cut a bigger hole in the airbox so that i could get the adapter to fit from the inside of the airbox. The adapter has a few tabs on it and i used these to rivet it to the airbox. First up after lots of cutting and trial fitting was to sand everything up, clean with wax and grease remover, apply some black polyurethane sealant and then fit it all up and rivet it using extra washers. I also used a small L bracket and a bolt on the top. It is solid and sealed perfectly.

In the engine bay, i had to slightly bend an air conditioning hose out of the way and gently hammer a panel out where the hose connects to the adapter. Will show more pics of fit up when i drill the hole for the hose, let the airbox dry and all the other nick nacks are ready."

I reckon the water would drown the ignition system and put the fire out long before it gets near the air intake. Maybe a useful item on a diesel but on a spark ignition engine other areas need protecting in a deep water crossing.

flame away on me for being so vanilla, but the stock induction system is designed by factory engineers between fuel economy, noise, power, and generally offers the best air filtration as well. Once moving, even on the absurd looking '96 intake, temp is close to outside ambient.

I dont think they would help much with dust, that is thrown up behind your vehicle ?

If you intend deep-water crossing, then I would say yes..just dont forget to loosen the fanbelt first !

Given you appear to do a fair bit of driving on dirt roads, there is a definite benefit having the air inlet up high. That is why earth moving equipment have their air inlet up high. Sorry to disagree with you awg. You will also reduce the amount of grass seeds & sticks finding their way into the filter. Any one looking for a snorkel should have a close look at what is needed. I recently purchased one for one of my KJ's, not the recommended one ( $400). A Pajero diesel one ($70), fits fine. Less modifications needed as well. That outback equipment mob have some well priced stuff.

Although I have done a few outback water/creek crossings in my time, the only time I have ever come close to drowning the engine was in Alexandria/Sydney when a freak hail storm came down a few years ago. Water went higher than the flares.
