My xj has just devoloped a squeak type noise in the passenger front side wheel increases with speed have put ot down to either a wheel bearing or a uni. It does however stop as soon as the brakes are touched does this help with the diagnosis.

There is a grease nipple for the top ball joint on the knuckle that many miss as it is not on your steering links. Grease that first. If it is bearing you can test it by jacking up the wheel and grabing it at 12 and 6 o clock and push with one hand and pull with the other to see if there is any play. Should be none.

Sounds like your brakes have got dust in them particularly as you say it goes when brakes are applied.

Angry

I wreckon maybe a wheel bearing is dry. Break application will stop the squeak some times as it assists the wheel running truer as the rotor gets pinched between the pads...
Mine has developed a tiny sqeak in the front right. When I apply the breaks it stops. I only hear it at about 50 to 60 Ks then it stops as the spead builds up or I apply breaks. Smidgeon of play in that wheel when the car is jacked up...
Do what GOJEEP said there should not be even an incy wincy tiny weeny bit of play at all. My play is slow slight you can hardly detect it *BUT* it is there and it is the bearing warn and drying up.

Have a gig at the link below:

slap her and make her walk.

I use to get a squeak all the time in my brakes.. just needed to clean them out on a more regular basis..I often found in the little tin cover on the inside of hte front grakes would hold small stones and bits of crud. also..I grease all my nipples and not just because it feels so good.
